Item Comparative Study of Sun Drying and Solar Tent Drying of Hyperopisus bebe occidentalis(Asian Network for Scientific Information, 2009) Ojutiku, R.O.; Kolo, Reuben Jiya; Mohammed, M.L.An experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of two drying processing methods on the nutritional qualities of Hyperopisus bebe. The two methods used were solar tent dryer and traditional sun drying methods. The experimental fish were dried for 120 h (5 days). The results of proximate analysis showed significant difference (p<0.05) between the two techniques. Organoleptic evaluation showed no physical damage, no discolouration in the treatments and both had firm texture though fishes under traditional sun drying were infected by insects.Item PLANKTON COMMUNITIES OF TAGWAI DAM MINNA, NIGERIA(Wilolud Journals, 2010) Kolo, Reuben Jiya; Ojutiku, R.O; Musulmi, D.TPlankton abundance and diversity of Tagwai dam was studied for twelve months. Five sampling stations were located on the reservoir. The stations were established based on the major tributaries to the reservoir and importance of the site. Plankton net was used to take plankton samples from the surface once every month. Plankton were preserved with preservatives and then transported to the laboratory for plankton analysis. The results revealed that plankton abundance in the reservoir was in the order: Crustaceans > Cynophyceae > Protozoans > Rotifiers > Bacillariophyceae > Desmidaceae > Chlorophyceae. While species diversity of zooplankton was in the following order: Protozoans > Crustaceans > Rotifiers, phytoplankton followed the order of Chlorophyceae > Bacillariophyceae > Cynophyceae > Desmidaceae. Plankton abundance of the reservoir was greatly influenced by season although not influenced by site. Bacillariophyceae positively and significantly correlated with Chlorophyceae, Crustaceans and Cynophyceae (P<0.05)Item The Assessment of Physico-Chemical Parameters of Shiroro Lake and its Major Tributaries(Fisheries Society of Nigeria, 1999) Kolo, Reuben JiyaThe physico-chemical parameters of the surface water of Shiroro lake and its major tributaries at their entry point to the reservoir were assessed over a period of eighteen months. As in other African inland water bodies there were seasonal variations in the parameters measured. The hydrological regime of the lake, precipitation chemistry, bedrock chemistry and hydro-electric power generation influence and determine the inputs of dissolved organic carbon, nutrient levels and water quality of the lake. They added nutrients to the lake by means of the major tributary rivers and inundation of surrounding areas also influence the water quality of the lake. The wet season mean values for water and air temperature were significantly (P < 0.05) higher than dry season mean values in all stations. However, for pH, Dissolved oxygen and Phosphate-phosphorus the dry season mean values were higher than wet season mean values.
