    The Influence of Social Media on Criminal Behaviour Among Convicted Inmates (A Study of Nigerian Correctional Institution Kiriki, Apapa Lagos State)

    This study explores the influence of social media on criminal behavior, highlighting both its facilitative and preventive roles. With the rise in global social media usage, platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and TikTok have increasingly become arena where various forms of criminal activities such as cyberbullying, cyber fraud, phishing, and extortion are perpetrated. The study examines how the anonymity, widespread reach, and rapid dissemination of information inherent in these platforms contribute to the proliferation of such crimes. Drawing on theories such as Social Learning Theory and Routine Activity Theory, the research provides a theoretical lens for understanding how social media interactions may normalize or encourage criminal acts. Utilizing a quantitative research design, data was collected via structured questionnaires administered to 100 male inmates incarcerated for cybercrimes at the Kirikiri Maximum and Medium Custodial Centers in Lagos, Nigeria. The findings aim to enhance the understanding of the complex relationship between social media and criminal behavior, offering insights for law enforcement, policy-makers, and social media users to develop effective preventive strategies and promote safer online environments.
