    Biochemical Evaluation of the Heart and Liver Homogenate of Female Albino Rat Exposed to Microwave Pellets.

    Intake of microwave food is increasingly becoming a cause for concern due to health risk often associated with exposure to radiations. Different studies have implicated radiation in diverse health abnormalities including genetic mutations and carcinogenesis. The aim of the study is to evaluate some biochemical parameters and histopathological studies of the heart and liver homogenate of female albino rat exposed to microwave pellets. Twenty four (N=24) female albino rats were used for the study and were randomly divided into 4 groups of six animals per group namely control, ceramic, plastic and aluminum groups. Control group were fed normal rat pellet, while the other groups were fed rat pellets exposed to microwave ceramic, plastic and aluminium plates respectively and water ad libitum for four weeks. Creatine kinase (CK) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) activities were evaluated in the heart homogenate while alanine aminitransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activities were evaluated in the liver. Total protein was also determined in both organs. Histopathological assay of the organs were also examined using standard technique. Results of the analysis showed that there were significant differences (P<0.05) in the biochemical parameters evaluated compared with the control group and photomicrographs of the tissues reveal that the structural integrity of the heart and liver cells were altered and this might compromise their functions due to continuous exposure to microwave diet. The study proves that microwave radiation may cause injuries in the organs in respective of the utensils used.
