Item The Moderating Effect of Location on Small Firm Performance: Empirical Evidence(International Journal of Business and Management, 2011-10) Esuh Ossai-Igwe Lucky; Mohd Sobri MinaiThe global interest on entrepreneurship and small business development as a means of economic sustainability and growth through emphasis on location has not been commonly utilized and openly declared. However, the inconsistent results on the relationship between entrepreneurial factors and firm performance have led the authors to propose a contingency model in which the effects of individual determinants, external factors and firm characteristics on firm performance are moderated by location. A cross-sectional study of questionnaire survey research design was conducted and data was generated from 182 entrepreneurs or owner managers of small firms in both manufacturing and service industries. The questionnaires were distributed through drop-off and pick procedure of data collection. The findings indicate that location strongly moderate the relationship between both external factors and firm characteristics with firm performance. Self management has not been explored in both academic and practical field of small business and entrepreneurship discipline. Research in this area has only been focusing on entrepreneurship and time management. This paper is motivated to discuss self management in relation to entrepreneur and small business performance. The paper argues on the crucial role of self management for entrepreneurs’ success and firm performance. It highlights that self management deserves urgent and serious attention in entrepreneurial discourse and should not be neglected. Most of the studies focus on the common attributes and categories that neglect the aspect of location. However, the inconsistent results on the relationship between entrepreneurial factors and firm performance have led the authors to propose a contingency model in which the effects of individual determinants, external factors and firm characteristics on firm performance are moderated by location. The paper argues the significance importance of location factor in the development of entrepreneurship and small business in Nigeria and thus suggests that location factor should be given an urgent consideration as a vital factor that would positively affect small business performance.Item Re-investigating the effect of individual determinant, external factor and firm characteristics on small firm performance during economic downturn(African Journal of Business Management, 2012) Esuh Ossai-Igwe Lucky; Mohd Sobri MinaiThere have been inconsistencies with regard to the different entrepreneurial factors that influenced firm performance, particularly in normal time. However, during economic downturn or turbulence, it is believed and expected that the three major characters (entrepreneur, environment and firm) in the economy that are actively involved in entrepreneurial activities would be badly and negatively affected. Despite this, an empirical study substantiating these arguments seems to be lacking, particularly in the small business and entrepreneurship domain. This therefore suggests that some of the major influential factors of individual determinant, external factor and firm characteristics in entrepreneurial development and small businesses should be re-investigated in line with the current situation in order to see if they remain significant during economic downturn. Based on this, a cross-sectional study was conducted using a questionnaire survey research design, and data were generated from 182 entrepreneurs or owner-managers of small firms in both manufacturing and service industries. The questionnaires were distributed through drop-off and pick procedure of data collection. Finally, the paper highlights some measures that could assist the small businesses in surviving economic downturn.Item Determinants of Business Success: Trust or Business Policy?(International Refereed Research Journal, 2012-07) Esuh Ossai-Igwe Lucky; Muhammad Shukri Bakar; Adebayo Isaiah OlusegunMost times businesses prefer to trust their business partners and customers in achieving success than keeping to the rules and regulations guiding the business activities. Experience has also shown that many businesses claimed to rely on trust to achieve business success, however, business policy seems to play more significant and effective role in achieving business success and keeping the business going. Therefore, the issue of whether trust determines business success better than business policy called for an urgent attention as many businesses relied on trust rather than business policy. In view of this, the paper examines which among one of these factors better determine business success. It examined trust and business policy based on credit and loans perspective. Based on the literature and previous business experience, it was argued that businesses could make better success and prevent the business from death by sticking on their business policy rather than mere business trust which could be injured.Item Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) As A Strategy For Managing Nigerian External Reserves For Sustainable Development(IOSR Journal of Economics and Finance, 2013) Onochie Maxwell Prosper; Okafor Chinonye; Faboyede Olusola SamuelGood governance allows a responsible economic and financial management of a nation’s public and natural resources, for the purpose of growth and development. Nigeria’s ability to make remarkable progress in curbing corruption and instituting pragmatic/workable economic and public sector reforms in the system via anti-corruption activities will give her a chance to achieve sustainable growth and development in the management of external reserves. The mechanisms of Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Independent and Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC) and due process have been very instrumental in this regard. An empirical survey on the performance of EFCC shows that the agency is a very key strategy in redeeming the battered image of the Nigeria and making her external reserves management skills a successful one in spite of the fact that criticisms have trailed the agency’s activities. The paper concludes that on the overall, the realization of the laudable objectives of good external reserves management will be a mirage if leadership problems of lack of integrity, transparency, corruption, and a travesty/disregard for due process, continue to subsist due to an absence of a vehicle for accountability like the EFCC.Item The Entrepreneur`s Mental Capacity and Firm Performance(The Business & Management Review, 2013-03) Esuh Ossai-Igwe Lucky; Sobri Minai MohdAlthough, studies on entrepreneurial factors are abundant, however, certain factors still deserve further attention. As a result, this study investigates the influence of entrepreneurs' mental capacity on the firm performance. Based on this, a cross-sectional study of questionnaire survey research design was conducted and data was generated from 182 entrepreneurs of small firms in both manufacturing and service industries. The questionnaires were distributed through drop-off and pick procedure of data collection. Overall, the findings indicate that there is a significant relationship between entrepreneurs' mental capacity and firm performance. It further indicates that entrepreneurs' mental capacity dimensions which include business handling, resolve business issues, stable mind, mental alertness, sound decisions, maturity, and self ability, control and management also influence firm performance. Based on the findings, the study highlights the theoretical and practical implications including the limitations and the suggestions for future study.Item Project Management Challenges and Difficulties: A Case Study of Information System Development(International Postgraduate Business Journal, 2014) Esuh Ossai-Igwe Lucky; Ojeniyi Adegoke; Norani NordinThe successful development of Information System (IS) is not high even with enormous interest and fund committed by organizations on this new technology. It has been revealed that a combination of insufficient and unsuitable project management issues are responsible for this low rate of IS development. This paper presents the findings of the fieldwork and interview conducted on the challenges and difficulties of system development project. The study employed both personal interview and observation methods. The findings revealed that fund, infrastructures (hardware and software), manpower, management commitment, monitoring and inspection were the critical challenges and difficulties faced by organizations during their system development. Therefore, the study concludes that fund, infrastructures (hardware and software), manpower, management commitment, monitoring and inspection play crucial role for an effective system development. Our study recommends that there should be sufficient budget to procure the right system hardware and software for right requirements. Secondly, training of staff for both IS development and management should be given urgent attention.Item Time Management, External Motivation, and Students’ Academic Performance: Evidence from a Malaysian Public University(Canadian Center of Science and Education, 2014) Esuh Ossai-Igwe Lucky; Mohd Hasanur Raihan Joarder; Abdul Rahman HamzahSocieties all over the world have used education as the instrument for the national development while students’ academic performance has the real impact on their professional career development. There are many factors which can directly affect students’ academic performance. However, after extensive reviews of the past literatures, the researchers argued that time management and external motivation have relatively higher influences on students’ academic performance. The quantitative questionnaire survey method was employed for this study. The findings of the study indicated that there is a significant and positive relationship between time management and students’ academic performance. In the light of the findings, we discuss the importance of time management in order to improve students’ academic performance. Implications, suggestions and recommendations for students, parents, policy makers and educational stakeholders were discussed.Item Exploring the Role of Entrepreneurship Studies for Economic Transformation and National Development(Nigerian Journal of Business and Entrepreneurship Research, 2014) Onochie Maxwell Prosper; Eke O. Patrick; Moses Chinonye LoveLack of right policy initiatives and discipline in the educational system toward producing self reliant graduates seem to be responsible for the high rate of unemployment; increasing graduate unemployability syndrome; low human development index (standard of living) and the "youth budge" syndrome, evidenced in the increasing crime wave. This paper examines the impact of entrepreneurial development studies (EDS) and Nigerian government support of EDSon national development. The paper adopts the ordinary least square (OLS) technique for the analysis and the result identified that there is need for the development of national venture capital and an agency for securitization of such project to support the philosophy of entrepreneurship in Nigeria. Based on the finding of this paper, we recommend that the right policy initiatives and supports should be evolved to develop and drive entrepreneurial capacities and discipline among every Nigerian for National development if Nigeria as a nation wants to become one of the top twenty (20) world economies in 2020.Item Managerial Factors and Management Conflict in Venture Capital Financing in Malaysia(Canadian Center of Science and Education, 2014) Esuh Ossai-Igwe Lucky; Mohd Sobri bin Minai; Hisham bin MohammadThe warm venture cooperation built between venture capitalists and entrepreneurs may still be interrupted by the management's conflicts occurred due to various managerial factors. As a result, this study investigates the management conflict in venture capital investments. A cross-sectional study of questionnaire survey research design was conducted in this respect. Questionnaire data was generated from 35 Malaysian venture capital companies located in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor. The questionnaires were distributed through the mailing procedure. Overall, the findings indicate that the managerial factors significantly influence the management conflict. Further results show that managerial factors which consist of Deal Origination and Screening (DOS), Evaluating Venture Proposal (EVP), Contracting and Deal Structuring (CDS), Monitoring and Post Investment Activities (MPI) and Risk Management (RM) significantly influence the formation of management conflict in venture cooperation. Based on the findings, it is inferred that managerial factors does influence the occurrence of management conflict in venture cooperation. Thus, the study recommends that Malaysian venture capitalists give consideration to the managerial factors in reducing or curbing the possibility of conflict to occur.Item Mergers and Acquisitions as Impetus for Achieving Customer-Driven Development of the Banking Sector in Nigeria(International Journal of Behavioral Social and Movement Sciences, 2014-06) Eleboda Samuel Sunday; Aransiola Solomon YinkaThe aim of this research is to assess the effectiveness of mergers and acquisitions in the drive towards creating a Nigerian banking industry that is customer-focused. The research was carried out using a sample of one hundred and twenty (120) respondents comprising of customers of four banks namely: UBA Plc, Skye Bank Plc, GTBank Plc and Zenith Bank Plc. The four banks consist of two that were merged or acquired and two that were able to raise their capital base without mergers and acquisition. A structured questionnaire was administered on the respondents to elicit information on their perception of the performance of the banking industry after it was restructured in 2005.The analyses show that with an overall mean value of 2.89 for banks that merged or acquired, and 3.12 for banks that did not undergo mergers and acquisition, customers of banks that did not merge appear more satisfied than those of the merged banks. They also show that the mean scores for questions regarding interest on loans and advances are higher than 3. These means suggest that customers somewhat agree that improved capitalization has indeed reduced interest on loans and advances. We conclude therefore that the directives given to the banks by CBN to merge or be acquired in order to increase their capital base may have been rightly given as there is indeed an improvement in banking practices as shown by customers’ satisfaction and accessibility to loans and advances. Also, the indirect merger justification of increasing market power has been significantly achieved. Through the mergers and acquisitions, the merged or new banking institutions were better able to compete with similar institutions within their markets both locally and internationally (particularly at the African regional level), and have increased their product sales, and, thus, their gross revenueItem Inventing Humour Advertising as a Competitive Paradigm in the Nigerian GSM Industry(International Journal of Behavioral Social and Movement Sciences, 2014-10) Eleboda Sunday SamuelThe aim of this study is to investigate the advent and growing popularity of humor advertising as a competitive tool for influencing the buying behavior of consumers of GSM services in Nigeria. Following the liberalization of the industry in 2001, there has been an upsurge in the competition among the licensed operators of the industry with a view to gaining significant market share. As a means of pushing a product/service into the consciousness of existing and prospective consumers advertising works on their attention, liking and persuasion to purchase a product/service. Humor advertising has been reported in the literature as a successful means of gaining consumers’ attention, liking, persuasion and action. Primary research method was adopted through the use of questionnaire. The questionnaire was developed to identify the relationship between demographic variables such as age, sex, and education on the effectiveness of humor advertising on consumer buying behavior. A random sample of 100 respondents was selected using multistage sampling procedure. Out of the 100 copies of the questionnaire distributed, 92 (92%) were retrieved. Data gathered were analyzed with the use of tables, charts, percentages and a few inferential statistics including correlation coefficient. Results show that humorous adverts can be used effectively to create affection towards the advertised product/service even in the developing economies like Nigeria. Results also show that gender can significantly influence humor advertising as women appear more likely to be persuaded by humor adverts than men.Item Relationship between Entrepreneurial Orientation, Entrepreneurial Skills, Environmental Factor and Entrepreneurial Intention among Nigerian Students in UUM(Entrepreneurship and Innovation Management Journal, 2014-11) Esuh Ossai-Igwe Lucky; Najafi Auwalu IbrahimGovernments in the developing countries are doing enough to ensure student's engagement in entrepreneurship activities in order to reduce the level of unemployment among graduates. However, among these students lack of entrepreneurial intention is very common. Therefore, this study examined the entrepreneurial intention among Nigerian students in UUM. The study used cross-sectional research design with quantitative questionnaire approach. The study used convenience sampling technique to select 155 participants who provided information on the entrepreneurial orientation, entrepreneurial skill and environmental factor and their connection with entrepreneurial intention among Nigerian students. A regression analysis was used to analysis the data. Overall, the study revealed that both entrepreneurial orientation and entrepreneurial skill have a strong association with entrepreneurial intention among Nigerian students. On the contrary, the finding revealed that the environmental factor is not significantly related with the entrepreneurial intention of Nigerian students. The study concludes that both entrepreneurial orientation and entrepreneurial skill are essential factors required to realize entrepreneurial intention by the Nigerian students in UUM. Limitations and future directions are also discussed in this study.Item The Mediating Role of Intrapreneurial Orientation between Leadership Style, Knowledge Sharing Behaviour and Performance of Malaysian Academic Leaders: A Conceptual Framework(Sains Humanika, 2015) Esuh Ossai-Igwe Lucky; Muhammad Shukri Bakar; Rosli MahmoodAlthough significant relationships have been documented between the variables of leadership styles, knowledge sharing behaviour and performance, still their relationships remain less studied particularly as they relate to academic leaders' performance. To address this paucity and to explain these linkages further, authors have continued to propose a mediating role in the relationship among these variables. As a result, this paper develops and proposes intrapreneurial orientation as a mediator on the relationships between leadership styles (transformational and transactional), knowledge sharing behaviour, and performance of academic leaders in Malaysian universities. First it argues that transformational and transactional leadership styles and knowledge sharing behaviour should influence intrapreneurial orientation and performance, second, intrapreneurial orientation would also affect performance. Next, it argues that by acting as a mediator, intrapreneurial orientation may act as a conduit that will better explain the relationships amongst these variables.Item Environmental Factors And Entrepreneurial Intention Among Nigerian Students In UUM(Sains Humanika, 2015) Esuh Ossai-Igwe Lucky; Najafi Auwalu IbrahimThis study examined the influence of environmental factors on the entrepreneurial intention of Nigerian students in UUM. Specifically, the study investigated the influence of environmental support and environmental influence on the entrepreneurial intention of Nigerian students in UUM. A cross-sectional research design with quantitative questionnaire approach was conducted. The study used convenience sampling technique to select 159 participants who provided information on the environmental support, environmental influence and entrepreneurial intention of Nigerian students in UUM. A multiple regression analysis technique was employed for the data analysis. The result of the analysis revealed that neither environmental support nor environmental influence is significantly related to entrepreneurial intention of Nigerian students in UUM. The study concludes that both entrepreneurial orientation and entrepreneurial skill are essential factors required to realize entrepreneurial intention by the Nigerian students in UUM. Discussion on the finding is highlighted and the implication of the study including its limitations is also provided.Item Financial Leverage and Firms’ Value: A Study of Selected Firms in Nigeria(European Journal of Research and Reflection in Management Sciences, 2016) Kesinro Olalekan Rasheed; Adenugba Adesoji Adetunji; Ige Abayomi AkinyemiThe main objective of this study is to determine the relationship between financial leverage and firms’ value, as well as evaluate the effect of financial leverage on firms’ value. A sample of 5 firms listed on Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) for a period of 6 years from2007-2012 was used. Data were sourced from annual reports of selected firms. The Ordinary Least Square (OLS) statistical technique was used for data analysis and hypothesis testing. The study revealed that there is significant relationship between financial leverage and firms’ value and that financial leverage has significant effect on firms’ value. The study concludes that financial leverage is a better source of finance than equity to firms when there is need to finance long-term projects. However, various economic factors may have despicable effects on the profitability of Nigerian firms, as such the use of debt financing in such firms may yield negative impact such as bankruptcy as well as low firm value. The study therefore recommends that financial leverage be optimized by firms to aid maximization of firms’ value.
