Item Preservation and Conservation of Information Materials in Special Libraries in Nigeria(Journal of Research in Education and Society., 2011-08) Lateef Elizabeth Bukunola; Aina A. J.; Adeleke O.This study was carried out to investigate as its major aim the conservation and preservation practices at Chevron Texaco Nigeria Limited, and the Nigerian Conservation Foundation (NCF), Lagos. A descriptive research design was used for the study. A total population of 60 was considered for the study. Questionnaire, interview and personal observations were the major instruments used for data collection. Data were analyzed using frequency tables and percentages. The study established that the major factor responsible for the deterioration of information materials in these organizations is the poor handling of information materials. Space was observed to be the major problem confronting effective preservation and conservation of information materials. Although this problem was partially solved by transferring documents awaiting retention to the archive. It was therefore recommended among others that there should be training programmes for information handlers/users, and improvement in the storage environment should also be given to priority paramount.Item A Survey of Postgraduate Students Perception of University Library Resources in Selected Nigerian Universities(International Research: Journal of Library and Information Science Volume 3, 2013-03-01) Lateef Elizabeth BukunolaUniversity is essentially an academic community dedicated to the pursuit of higher learning and teaching. However, a university is populated mostly by students and staff. There are different categories of students in Nigerian universities environment which include the diploma, first degrees and higher degrees students respectively. The post graduate students belong to the higher degrees category that pursue post graduate diploma, masters, and doctoral degrees which entail more research works that require the services and resources of well equipped and functional libraries. The objectives of post graduate study in any university is for further development of graduate students the spirit of enquiring through training in research in an atmosphere of intellectual independence and individual creativity with a strong sense of group cooperation.Item Application of Scientific Methods in Library and Information Research: A Case Study of Librarians in South East Nigeria(International Research: Journal of Library & Information Science, 2014) Nwaogu Humphrey Oguchinalu; Ifijeh Goodluck IThis study is a survey of the application of scientific methods to research among librarians in South East Nigeria. It examines the purpose for the application of scientific methods to research, as well as the obstacles that librarians in South east Nigeria face in their bid to apply scientific methods to research. Survey method was adopted for the study, while a structured questionnaire was used as instrument for data collection. 120 questionnaires were distributed to librarians; 88 representing 73.3% were filled and returned. Result of the study shows that librarians use scientific methods in carrying out research. It also shows that librarians applied scientific methods to research for the main purpose of analyzing data and testing hypothesis. The study further revealed that application of scientific methods to research in librarianship helps the profession to be more scientific in outlook and also helps in collation and analyzes of data to solve professional problems. Lastly, It identified lack of funds as a major obstacle to the application of scientific methods to research among librarians in South east Nigeria. The study recommended the need for government at both National and State levels to provide funds for scientific research in librarianship, considering the benefits of such researches to library and national development. There is also need for the Nigeria Library Association to organize awareness programmes to enlighten librarians on the need to apply scientific methods in their research investigations.Item The Use of Electronic Journals by Lecturers: A Case Study of University of Ibadan, Nigeria(International Journal of Education and Social Science, 2014-08) Nwaogu Humphrey Oguchinalu; Ifijeh Goodluck IThis study investigated the use of electronic journals by lecturers of University of Ibadan, Nigeria. The descriptive survey research was adopted for the study. Questionnaire was used as the data collecting tool for this study. The population comprise of all faculties (Lecturers) of the University of Ibadan, Nigeria. A total of four hundred and sixty-seven questionnaires were filled and returned. The study found that lecturers in the University of Ibadan use e-journals for personal and academic reasons. It was also discovered that in their quest to use electronic journals, lecturers face such challenges as low bandwidth, poor electricity supply etc. Solutions and recommendations were however offered.Item Information and Communication Technology Adoption and Use Among Students Of A Nigerian University For Distance Learning(Library Philosophy and Practice, University of Nebraska, 2015) Omotosho, A.O.; Lateef, Elizabeth Bukunola; Amusa, O.I.; Bello, T.O.This study investigates the use of ICT for distance learning by students of the National Open University of Nigeria. A descriptive survey design was adopted for this study and the main instrument for data collection was questionnaire. Copies of the questionnaire were administered on students of the National Open University of Nigeria, main campus, Lagos. Findings from the data analysis revealed that the level of ICT use among the respondents was high and; easy accessibility to most of the ICT facilities needed for distance learning is identified as the major factor responsible for the high level of usage of ICT by the respondents. Benefits, such as enhanced access to quality education, improved level of knowledge, opportunity to study through a variety of methods, cost effective education opportunities as well as overcoming time barriers were some of the benefits the use of ICT for distance learning highlighted in this study. Although considerable benefits are derived from the use of ICT for distance learning, constraints such as erratic power supply, frequent breakdown of ICT facilities, and controlled access to ICT facilities were identified as some of the factors militating against the use of ICT for distance learning. Findings from this study, it can be concluded that the level of ICT use for distance learning and the benefits derivable from it are high although there are few constraints to their effective and maximum use among distance learning students. They provide prompt reference opportunity and bring library and information services closer to users. This study assessed the level of usage and users’ assessment of college libraries at the Crawford University, Nigeria. Methodology: The study evaluated the users’ level of satisfaction with the resources and services of the two college libraries in the university. The respondents were undergraduate students at their various levels of study, 100-400 levels. 200 students were randomly selected for the study and corresponding copies of the questionnaire were administered on them to gather data. A total of 194 (87%) responses were received. Findings: The results indicated that the students use their college libraries sparingly; they use the libraries less for references and other academic purposes but more for relaxation in between lectures and to discuss with mates and friends. However, the respondents rate the information resources, services and facilities of the libraries as fair. The study concluded that the resources and services of the college libraries are poorly used and used less for academic purposes. This may not be unconnected with the fair rating of the libraries by the respondents. Implications: The research emphasised that there should be adequate awareness on the benefits of using the college libraries to students as it was discovered that the level of usage was poor. Originality/Value: The study proffered recommendations among which are guided tour of the libraries during the fresh students’ orientation programme; improvement in the user education course of the University, it should made more practical; and motivation of staff of the library in order to make them more pleasant and responsive to users’ services and needs.Item Records Management and Preservation Practices in Motor Registration and Licensing Offices in South-West Nigeria(Journal of Applied Information Science andTechnology, 2016) Lateef Elizabeth Bukunola; Omotosho Akinkunmi Oluseun; Amusa Oyintola Isiaka; Bello Taoffik OlatundePurpose: This study investigated the status of records management in themotor registration and licensing offices in south-west Nigeria.This is because there have been many instances at the licensing offices in Nigeria of misplaced or lost records thus raising a question on how records are managed. Methodology: Survey research method was adopted, and questionnaire was used to gather data. The respondents are the entire staff of the licensing offices at the state capital of the six states that constituted the zone.150 copies of questionnaire were administered to the personnel on random basis out of which 118 (79%) were duly completed and returned. Findings: Analysis of data obtained revealed that management of records at the licensing offices is poor and lack modernity. There are no adequate records management facilities in the offices besides cabinet storage and dusting of records. There are no policy documents for records management, there is absence of designated records management staff and departments; Proper training, workshops and skills in records management are lacking amongst the personnel. Implications: This study has implications on the management of records in licensing offices in southwest Nigeria because records support decision-making, provide evidence of policies, decisions, transactions and other activities consequently records management and preservation are crucial. Records management and preservation focus on efficient and systematic control of records that are created as a result of activities and transactions among individuals, in public and private establishments. Originality/value: The study in conclusion recommends the institutionalization of records management policies, the appointment of a records manager, training and re-training of existing staff, and adoption of ICT to manage records.Item Use of Online Learning Resources by Students: The Case of Crawford University, Nigeria(Covenant Journal of Communication, 2018) Lateef Elizabeth Bukunola; Ozonuwe, Opene Sunday; Nwaogu, Humphrey OguchilaluIn the past, access to library holdings was through cabinet boxes via card catalogue system which took time and warped users. Not anymore. From the comfort of one's remote location, uninterrupted access to learning resources through the Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC) system is now the standard. This study investigates the level of awareness and the use of OPAC services by the undergraduate students of Crawford University, Nigeria. Focus is on the challenges encountered and possible solutions. Findings from 115 respondents show that majority of the respondents, 81.8%, are not aware of the OPAC services, 97.3% heavily rely on the library staff and the shelf list to locate and retrieve library resources, 90.0% rely on their peers, 94.5% wander from one shelf to the other while 65.5% scatter the shelves before they find what they are searching for! Orientation and re-orientation of the students toward OPAC and publicity hold the key to a visible and optimum use of the system.Item Accessing the Adoption of Mobile Learning in Nigeria: The Library Perspective: A Case of Crawford University, Igbesa Ogun State, Nigeria.(Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal), 2018) Nwaogu Humphrey Oguchinalu; Ifijeh Goodluck IWith the influx of new technologies in the world, learning is becoming more interesting than ever before. The study was conducted to access the adoption of mobile learning in Nigeria. Three objectives and three research questions were formulated to guide the researcher. 200, 300 and 400 levels of College of Natural and Applied Sciences and College of Social Sciences were the study population. The sampled population was 83 respondents which is the 10% of the entire population. Structured questioner was the instrument used for data collection. It was discovered that smart phones and laptops were the mobile technologies preferred for mobile learning. It was also discovered that mobile technologies enhance learning but the adoption in Nigeria educational system has been hindered by lots of challenges. Conclusion was made on the need for educators, curriculum designers/ planners, librarians etc, to promote the use of mobile technology for rendering and extending academic services that is education 2.0, library 2.0 and web2.0 to be incorporated into the school curriculum. Design/Methodology/Approach: The study adopted a descriptive research design of survey type and it is meant to ensure that the evidence obtained enables this research to answer four research questions that were formulated for the study. The research questions addressed four parameters which are awareness, acceptance, perception and attitude. Questionnaires were administered electronically to parents in the selected location of the study and the method of data analysis employed in the study was descriptive statistics and this includes percentages and frequency distribution. Findings: The results of the analysed data revealed that parents’ awareness of the School on-air programmes is high as 99.1% affirmed that they were aware of the programmes on Ekiti State radio station. However the perception of the parents is positive as 88.8% of the respondents found the programmes not boring and 84% of the respondents disagree with the statement that the programmes is not ideal for teaching and learning process, by implication majority are in support of the programmes as ideal for teaching and learning process. The level of the parents’ acceptance of school on-air programmes is high as majority of the respondents 96.4% agree that the programmes is educative. While their attitude toward the programmes is highly encouraging as 71.0% indicated that even in the absence of electricity power supply by BEDC they always ensure there is an alternative means to ensure their children listen to the school on-air programmes on the radio. Practical Implications: The school on-air program expands the experiences of the children and support classes with under qualified teachers. Originality/Value: The originality of this paper lies in the argument on whether parents have sufficient knowledge about the school on-air program and it importance to the education survival.Item Understanding Academic Integrity and 21st Century Perspectives on Plagiarism and Copy Right Infringement(Crawford University Press, 2022) Nwaogu Humphrey Oguchinalu; Ozonuwe Opene SundayThis study was motivated by the alarming rate of academic dishonesty, plagiarism and copy right infringement practices within the academic environment. The study investigated career orientation as a determinant for career choice in librarianship among final year students in federal unity schools in Lagos State, Nigeria. Descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. The study populations were 937 final year students in Federal Unity Schools, Lagos State. 50 percent of the entire population was used bringing the sample size to 468 respondents. Questionnaire was the data collection instrument, data collected were analysed using SPSS version 24 and results were presented in frequency table using percentage count, mean and standard deviation. The study found that the overall mean of career orientation of student was “33.37” and it was concluded that the level of career orientation of final year students in Federal Unity Schools in Lagos State, Nigeria was average. Also, the overall mean of career choice in librarianship was “28.39” which indicates average level of career choice in librarianship among final year students in Federal Unity Schools in Lagos State, Nigeria. The test of hypotheses showed a positive linear relationship between career orientation and career choice among final year students in Federal Unity schools in Lagos State, Nigeria. The study concluded that career choice in librarianship is dependent on extensive career orientation of secondary school students. It was recommended that qualified professionals in librarianship and guidance and counselling should be engaged to help the students take advantage of the numerous opportunities that abound in librarianship profession among others.Item Availability of Information Resources, Utilization of College Libraries and Academic Performance of Undergraduate Students in Crawford University(International Journal of Innovation Scientific Research and Review, 2023-04-22) Nwaogu Humphrey Oguchinalu; Ozonuwe Opene Sunday; Ogungbade Aderonke Ayobami; Ogundana Ayomide AyoolaAcademic library provide access to information resources that facilitates research endeavours and human resources development of its users, hence the study investigated the availability of information resources, utilization of college libraries and academic performance of undergraduate students in Crawford University. Five research objectives were developed to guide the researchers. Descriptive survey design was adopted for the study; the study population was 400 levels undergraduate students of 2021/2022 academic year. Only the two hundred and ninety five registered students as at the time of the research, constitutes the sample size for the study. Questionnaire was the instrument of data collection, data collected was analyzed with SPSS version 20. Results obtained were presented in percentage and frequency with bar chart. The hypothesis was tested at 0.05 level of significant and it was concluded that there is a significant relationship between utilization of information resources and academic performance of undergraduate students. It concluded that effective utilization of information resources in the college libraries would result in improvement of the academic performance of the undergraduate students. It recommended that the University Management should continually approve budgets for the acquisition of current information resources both print and electronic copies, databases and internet subscriptions among others.Item Digital Consciousness as a Correlate of Library Use among Undergraduates in the Faculty of Science, Federal University, Oye-Ekiti(International Journal of Information Resource Management (IJIRM), 2024) Ajayi Taiwo Bosede; Opele Jacob Kehinde; Lateef Elizabeth BukunolaThis research aims to fill this gap by investigating the relationship between digital consciousness and library use among undergraduate students at the Faculty of Science, Federal University OyeEkiti. The study employs the descriptive survey design. The main instrument for data collection was a questionnaire, which was validated with a Cronbach's coefficient of 0.7 and above. Data collected for the study was analysed with mean, standard deviation, Relative Importance Index, and correlation. Findings from the study revealed an overall moderate extent of library use among undergraduates. In addition, it shows that the most utilised library services by undergraduates were photocopy services, lending services, group study rooms, reference services, Internet services, and books. Similarly, the study found a high level of digital consciousness among the students. The study also revealed that lack of a library map to guide users, inadequate reading space, library staff’s unfriendly attitude, inadequate ventilation, poor internet network, obsolete materials, and inadequate sitting space as the major factors militating against library use in the Faculty of Science, FUOYE. Overall, the study revealed a statistically significant relationship between digital consciousness and library use among undergraduates. The paper recommended that faculty members should actively engage with undergraduate students through targeted outreach efforts by organizing workshops, seminars, and information sessions. Emphasise the value of utilising physical materials, specialised databases, and personalised assistance from librarians to complement digital resources.Item Computer Literacy Skills as a Determinant of Electronic Reference Sources Utilization among Selected Secondary School Students in Ado-Odo Ota Local Government, Ogun State, Nigeria(International Journal of Knowledge Content Development & Technology, 2024) Ozonuwe Opene Sunday; Lateef Elizabeth Bukunola; Farukuoye Adesanmi MathewThe study investigated computer literacy skills as a determinant of electronic reference sources utilization among selected secondary school students in Ado-Odo Ota Local Government, Ogun State, Nigeria. Four specific objectives with conforming research questions guided the study. Descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. The population of the study comprises of SSS3 students of the three selected Community Secondary Schools in Ado Odo Ota. A sample size of 150 was used for the study. The instrument for data collection was a self-developed structured questionnaire. Data collected was analyzed using frequency and percentages. Findings of the study revealed that majority of secondary school students were not aware of the availability of electronic reference sources. It also revealed that the level of their computer literacy skills was below average. Majority of them have never used computer before and the few of them that have used computer before used it in their homes, their friend’s homes or in the cyber café. It was found that lack of formal training on the use of electronic reference sources, lack of access to computer, lack of awareness of availability of electronic reference sources, lack of funds for internet subscriptions, over dependency on printed reference sources and lack of motivation to use electronic reference sources were the major hindrances to the use of electronic reference sources among secondary school students. Survey research was conducted to determine the influence of Information Literacy Skills (ILS) as a predictor of Knowledge Sharing Practices (KSP) among Federal College of Forestry Students in Ibadan, Oyo-State. The study sought to find the types, tools, purposes and challenges of sharing knowledge among Federal College of Forestry students Ibadan. The study adopted a quantitative method and deployed a questionnaire-based survey research design. Its population consists of 361 respondents from the Federal College of Forestry Students. The sample size was drawn using a random sampling technique. Data were analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The findings showed that the common types of knowledge shared are class notes/handouts, previous examination papers and entertainment such as music, video games, movies, Fashion, and sports. The tools mostly used were face-to-face, social media and mobile phones and the least tools used were Laptops. The purposes of sharing knowledge are to solve study-related problems, clarify or discuss the examination-related matter and discuss requirements of class projects, term papers, or assignments. Challenges to sharing knowledge among federal forestry college students include time constraints, Fear of providing wrong information and poor mobile and internet networks. The findings showed that the respondents had a high level of information literacy skills. The results also showed that information literacy skills have a significant positive relationship with the knowledge-sharing practices of Federal Forestry College students. Information literacy skills were found to have a significant positive relationship with knowledge-sharing practices, underscoring their importance in fostering a collaborative academic environment. To further enhance the positive impact of information literacy on knowledge sharing, the college should integrate comprehensive information literacy training into its curriculum. Uninterrupted career counselling and career information in librarianship will result in an upturn in the number of career choices in the profession. The objective of the study was to investigate the effect of career counselling and career information on career choice in librarianship among postgraduate students in library and information science schools in Southwestern Nigeria. A descriptive research design of correlational type was adopted for the study. The hypothesis was tested at 0.05 level of significance. The population of the study covered one hundred and sixty one (161) master's degree students of the library and information science programme in the 2019/2020 academic year in the Southwestern Nigeria. A total of 161 copies of questionnaire were administered personally by the researchers to the respondents, and 157 were retrieved and found satisfactory for the study. The Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) was used for data analysis, and the results obtained were presented in frequency and percentage, pie chart, and bar chart. The study discovered that the students were not interested in the librarianship profession at the first degree level, but they developed a passion for the profession later in life. The descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study, and the population of the study was one thousand six hundred (1,600) undergraduate students of Crawford University for the 2021–2022 academic year. A stratified random sampling technique was used to determine the sample size. A questionnaire was the instrument of data collection. Data generated were analysed using the statistical package for the Social Sciences (SPSS), and results were presented in descriptive and inferential statistics, frequency counts, simple percentages, means, standard deviations and charts. It was found that the majority of the undergraduate students at Crawford University were satisfied with the facilities, resources, and services provided to them by the library. Nonetheless, the study concluded and recommended that there should be improvement, especially in the areas of availability of newspapers, provision of a comfortable environment and quiet space, toilet facilities, and internet facilities. Also, maintenance culture should be upheld, and damaged equipment should be repaired or replaced, as a conducive environment will help to sustain a high level of user satisfaction among library users, among others.
